Department of Materials Chemistry

Department of Materials Chemistry Discovery of new materials has played an important role in the development of civilization. In the 20th Century, material scientists created various new materials, and introduced them into human society, and the standard of living was improved enormously. In order for human beings to enjoy a hopeful and prospective life in the 21st Century, materials and processes have to be further developed, so that our children do not inherit the environmentally degraded earth.
The Department covers a wide range of materials, such as new metals, ceramics, semiconductors, organic substrates, polymers, composite materials and environmentally conscious materials. These studies belong to a promising field opened as a result of the development of material science. The Department aims at training students for engineers and researchers who can develop such new materials in inorganic and organic chemistry.

Department of Mechanical Systems Engineering

Department of Mechanical Systems Engineering Mechanical system engineering plays a vital role as a pillar of all industries, and is indispensable for the development of technologies and systems that produce various kinds of industrial products that support our lives. The program offered by the Department of Mechanical Systems Engineering places great emphasis on fundamental courses. Essential to the curriculum is the incorporation of an extensive range of exercises and experiments by which abilities and skills to solve engineering problems and practical issues related to mechanical systems are developed. The program aims at training prospective mechanical engineers who can think systematically about mechanical engineering design and create original technologies which meet the needs of today's highly technological society.

Department of Electronic Systems Engineering

Department of Electronic Systems Engineering The Department of Electronic Systems Engineering provides an undergraduate program in electronics engineering and information sciences, catering to students with interests in these subjects and who wish to contribute to society as engineers in these fields. The department aims to support researches focusing on the technological challenges in the future. The courses in the department include electrical circuits, integrated circuits, electronic devices, sensing technology, and power electronics, as well as topics in information science. Talented undergraduate students will be offered considerable flexibility at the undergraduate level.

Center for Glass Science and Technology

Center for Glass Science and Technology The Center for Glass Science and Technology was established in the School of Engineering on 1st April 2007. The mission of the center is to promote basic researches on glass science and technology,
and to contribute to the development of high-efficient technology for glass processing. The core laboratory of this center is financially supported by donations from Nippon Electric Glass Co., Ltd. (NEG), whose business base is in Shiga Prefecture. In order to achieve the mission of the center, the following researches in the core laboratory are currently being carried out: 1. Optimization of refining process in high temperature glass melts. 2. Mechanism of brittle fracture and flow of inorganic glasses. 3. Thermal properties and their relaxation behaviors of high temperature glass melts. In addition to these researches, the center acts as an agent for collaborative researches between NEG and USP.
